Augumentative and Alternative Communication

The speech and language therapy team are responsible for assessing the communication needs of our pupils and providing them with the most appropriate and effective means of communicating and engaging with others. This ranges from the use of the Picture Exchange Communication System and other low-tech methods to high-tech Communication devices such as Dynavox, Springboard, Tobii and TechTalker; all of which are currently in use by pupils at Braidburn.

More information on the aforementioned augumentative and alternative communication (AAC) methods can be found on the sites below.

Dynavox - produce a range of medium to high tech AAC devices, very popular in Braidburn!

Prentrom - produce the Springboard and other AAC devices.

Pyramid Education Consultants - the chief providers of PECS in the UK

Tobii - pioneers in the field of eye-tracking technology, Tobii produce a range of high-tech AAC devices accessible by eye-gaze. Incredible technology which has helped a number of our pupils.

iPads and tablets in AAC

The advent of touch-screen tablet computers such as the iPad opens up new possibilities when it comes to AAC. Lothian-based organisation Keycomm have produced a document outlining some of the communication applications available for iPads which is available to view or download here in PDF format by clicking on the icon below.
